Agile design bricks for buildings

Agile design in building construction allows for increased cooperation among professionals, keeping costs under control, reducing construction site rework and low quality of work, and eliminating the conflicting and stressful management that characterizes projects in construction.
The presentation of “Agile Design” was made at the Agile Venture Pordenone event, organized by the Italian Agile Movement, which was held on 24-06-2023 at CGN headquarters.

Agile Design in Construction

This presentation is the result of work in Agile Design done at ANCE Verona Building Constructors, in a real project of the design of a two-family house with a cottage and 4 apartments.
Fabio Miglioranzi, Andrea Tonolli are, together with me, the authors of this paper.

Design process

Agile management of the design process up to the documentation you submit to the municipality for work approval.
This is a real project of a two-family house. Appropriately modified story mapping for backlog management and iterative and incremental development.
The extraordinary work of team building among professionals who previously worked separately.
Reducing time and costs along with increasing the quality of what is developed through the modified Agile approach to building design.
All in an industry like construction where the process has been out of control for several years.

Discovery & Construction

Product Discovery Product Construction

I talk to you about innovative product development, inspired by the book “
Inspired: How to Create Tech Products Customers Love ” by Marty Kagan. There is a big difference between leading companies and others in the product creation process. The key concept is “product discovery”: exploring and testing ideas before investing heavily. This is integrated with “product delivery” or “construction.” The author of the book stresses the importance of prototypes, which in HW I prefer to call “pretotypes,” and tools such as Lean Canvas and Story Mapping. There is too much focus on Scrum, when instead it is important to create truly useful functionality. The book is recommended for those who want to truly innovate.

The pretypes i.e., the forerunners of the product

Pretypes are quick and inexpensive demonstrators to test key ideas before creating complete prototypes. I am talking about an automated palletizing project where we made a pretotype of the most critical component, which was the tray, in just 15 days. We saved several months and significant investment. This pretotype allowed us to validate the best materials with which to build the final tray.
