In some statistics it seems that little research and development is done in Italy, which is very true for basic research. The fact is that in so many Made in Italy businesses, research and development is the daily activity of the entrepreneur, who is often able to pull solutions out of the hat that can conquer international markets and become a hidden champion, a pocket-sized multinational. But when the company grows and the entrepreneur, genius-founder, is no longer able to generate innovations, the risk is that the company can no longer maintain its competitive advantage. And the solution is not to bureaucratize the company and set up heavy product development processes but rather to put people at the center and facilitate their work with the Agile approach as Claudio Saurin suggests in his recent book, the Agile Factory.
